The purpose of the HANS device is to stop the head from "whipping forward" in a professional auto racing accident, without otherwise restricting movement of the driver's neck. In a collision, an unprotected driver is decelerated by the seatbelt with the head maintaining velocity until it is stopped by the neck.

The HANS device maintains the relative position of the head to the body, with the device transferring momentum to the stronger body part of the chest, torso, shoulder, seatbelts and seat as the head is decelerated.

	All HANS Devices are constructed of carbon fiber and include black contour padding, helmet anchors, tethers, and full instructions. Part numbers 9580, 81, and 82 include standard tethers while part numbers 9590, 91, and 92 include the new Vision Advantage Plus sliding tethers. The Pro series are constructed of high modulus carbon fiber for the lightest weight (approximately one pound) and include a soft cotton storage cover. The Extra series are constructed of carbon fiber and weigh approximately 1.5 pounds. The new Sport series are constructed of injection-molded super structural carbon fiber and weigh about two pounds -- less than most helmets! The Model 20 is designed for most upright applications, including the majority of sedans and sports cars. The Model 30 fits most reclined applications, including formula cars and sports racers. To find the correct starting point, sit in your car and measure the angle of your chest from vertical. If the angle is 25 degrees or less, try the Model 20. If the angle is 25 degrees or more, start with the Model 30.

Most major professional auto racing sanctioning bodies mandate the use of the HANS head and neck restraints - the FIA has made HANS use compulsory for all International-level events from the beginning of 2009. The HANS DEVICE is used by monster truck drivers in many events.

HANS Devices carry both SFI 38.1 certification and FIA 8858 homologation. They have been proven all over the world (35,000 sold and counting) since 1986 to reduce the risk of basal skull fractures and other neck injuries.
